On Monday, September 19, 2022, CommonHealth ACTION lost our most committed advocate and beacon.

David Harrington worked to build a better world from his time at Howard University to his most recent position as Senior Director of Kaiser Permanente’s Center for Total Health. In between those milestones, David spent 15 years of his career in public service beginning as the first Black Mayor of Bladensburg, Prince George’s County Council Member, and Maryland State Senator. Throughout his career, he was recognized for his relentless advocacy and dedicated leadership on behalf of the communities and residents he represented and served.

Our connection to David began within the first two years of our existence when we provided technical assistance for neighborhoods and residents in the Port Towns. Since then, he has worked with our team in several capacities – official and unofficial – including his most recent positions as our Culture of Health Leaders Program National Advisory Council Chair and Chair of CommonHealth ACTION’s Board. Throughout the years, he contributed to our success as an organization by sharing his networks, providing us with his wisdom and counsel, and being a source of encouragement during some of our most difficult seasons.

As we grieve the loss of this great force, our hearts are with the love of his life, Cheryl, his beloved children Stephen and Christopher, and their families, as well as all his extended family, friends, and colleagues. Although we are all conscious of the void left by the loss of his physical presence, we will continue to benefit from the value of his life’s work, passion, and mission. He is, simply, irreplaceable.

We will cherish our memories of you forever, David. Your legacy is ingrained in our souls.
